If you’ve spent any time researching Santorini, you already know the Oia sunset problem — the crowds, the elbowing, the phones-on-sticks, the sheer theatre of it all. What fewer people tell you is that Imerovigli Santorini sits higher on the caldera ridge than Oia, offers arguably better sunset angles, and on a busy August evening you might share that view with thirty people instead of three thousand. I’ve been to both, more than once, and there’s no contest for me anymore.

What Imerovigli Actually Feels Like

The village sits at about 300 metres above sea level — the highest point on the caldera rim — which means the views sweep further north and south than you get from Oia. The streets are narrow, the cats are numerous, and the blue-domed churches are genuinely old rather than freshly repainted for Instagram. It takes maybe twenty minutes to walk the entire length of the village. That’s not a complaint. That’s the whole point.

You’ll still find tourists here, especially in July and August. But the ratio of boutique hotels to Instagram influencers feels manageable. Most visitors day-trip from Fira or Kamari, which means by 7pm the village gets noticeably quieter. Stay the night and you’ll understand what Santorini felt like before the cruise ships started docking four deep.

Getting Here and Getting Around

From Fira, it’s a 2.5 kilometre walk north along the caldera path — flat enough, about 40 minutes at a relaxed pace, and genuinely lovely in the early morning or late afternoon. Taxis from Fira run around €10-15 depending on the driver’s mood. There’s also a local bus (KTEL) that stops in Imerovigli for €1.80, though the schedule is loose and the buses fill up fast in peak season.

Renting an ATV is the default Santorini move. Expect to pay €25-40 per day in 2026 — prices have crept up. Just know that the main road between Fira and Oia has serious traffic in summer, and the caldera-side path is more pleasant anyway if you’re walking.

Where to Watch the Sunset (Honestly)

Skaros Rock is the answer everyone should be giving. It’s a former medieval fortress that juts out dramatically from the cliff face just below Imerovigli, and the walk out to the end takes about 20-25 minutes on a rough path. Wear actual shoes. The sunset from the tip of Skaros faces almost due west, with Thirasia island in the distance and nothing between you and the horizon. I’ve sat out there with maybe a dozen people. In Oia on the same evening, there were probably 2,000.

The path down to Skaros starts just past the Anastasi Church — look for the small wooden sign. Go about an hour before sunset to find your spot on the rocks. Bring water and something to sit on.

If you’d rather have a drink in hand, Aroma Avlis restaurant has a terrace that faces west and serves decent wine without the markup you’d pay in Oia. A glass of Assyrtiko from a local Santo Wines bottle runs about €9-12. Not cheap, but not extortionate by Santorini standards.

Where to Eat

Imerovigli is small, so restaurant options are limited — but that’s actually fine. Outdoor restaurant Passaggio does solid mezedes and fresh fish; a full meal for two with wine lands around €70-90. The octopus they grill on the terrace is worth ordering even if you think you don’t like octopus.

For breakfast, the little bakery near the main bus stop sells tiropita and spanakopita from early morning. €2.50 for a slice. Eat it on the wall overlooking the caldera. You’ll feel slightly smug about your life choices.

Where to Stay

The cave hotels here are genuinely carved into the cliff, not just styled to look that way. Chromata Hotel and Astra Suites are the most established options — expect to pay €350-600 per night for a room with a caldera view in high season. Book well ahead; these places sell out by February for summer dates.

Budget travellers will struggle. There are a few simpler rooms available, but honestly if you’re watching every euro, stay in Fira and day-trip to Imerovigli for the evening.

What Else to Do

  • Walk the caldera path to Fira — the 2.5km stretch between Imerovigli and Fira is one of the better walks on the island, past crumbling windmills and small churches
  • Volcano and hot springs tour — you can book this through Viator and most departure boats stop at Fira’s old port, a 20-minute drive south
  • Wine tasting — Santo Wines is 15 minutes away by car and does tastings from €20 per person with caldera views that rival any restaurant
  • Early morning photography — before 7am the light is soft, the streets are empty, and the blue domes actually look like they belong to another century

Honest Caveats

Imerovigli isn’t undiscovered. The word is out. In July and August it gets busy enough that you’ll need reservations at the better restaurants and the cave hotels book up months in advance. Visit in May, early June, or September and the whole experience shifts — cooler evenings, fewer crowds, better prices, locals who are visibly less exhausted.

The hiking path along the caldera edge closes occasionally after heavy rain or when sections erode. Check with your hotel before setting out. And if someone tries to sell you a sunset cruise from Oia that promises an ‘exclusive’ experience — check reviews on GetYourGuide first, because the word exclusive gets used loosely around here.

Come for the quiet. Stay for the sunsets nobody back home has seen.
