Planning a trip to Santorini in October might be the smartest decision you make this decade. I’ve been to the island four times — twice in August, once in June, and once in late October — and the October trip was the one I’d actually repeat. The light is different. The people running the restaurants actually have time to talk to you. And the wine? The harvest is either wrapping up or just finished, which means the tavernas are pouring the new vintage with a kind of quiet pride you just don’t get in peak season.

What October Weather Actually Feels Like

Forget what the brochures say about ‘Mediterranean warmth.’ October in Santorini is genuinely pleasant, not scorching. Daytime temperatures sit between 18°C and 24°C (64°F–75°F). You can walk from Fira to Oia without sweating through your shirt. Evenings drop to around 15°C, so bring a light jacket — one layer, not a parka. There’s some rain in the second half of the month, usually short afternoon showers that last maybe 30 minutes. I got caught in one near Pyrgos. It passed before my coffee did.

The sea stays swimmable through most of October, hovering around 22°C. Perissa and Perivolos beaches on the southeastern coast are the ones worth visiting — black sand, less crowded, and the beach bars are still operating but not blasting EDM at noon.

Crowds in October 2026: The Honest Picture

Early October is noticeably quieter than July or August, but don’t expect a ghost town. The famous Oia sunset still draws a crowd — easily 200–300 people at the castle ruins on a clear evening. What changes is everything around that moment. You can actually book a table at Ammoudi Bay fish tavernas without a week’s notice. Slots open up. Prices drop.

Hotels typically run 30–40% cheaper than their August rates. I paid €180 per night for a cave suite in Imerovigli in October that would have cost €300+ in summer. Smaller cave properties like Ikies or Canaves Oia Suites sometimes release last-minute deals in October that genuinely feel like a steal.

Where Crowds Still Gather

  • Oia at sunset — still busy, arrive 45 minutes early for a good spot
  • Akrotiri archaeological site — manageable queues, €12 entry, opens at 8am
  • Cable car in Fira — short wait times compared to summer, usually under 10 minutes

Wine Harvest Season: The Real Draw

Santorini’s grape harvest typically runs August through early September, so by October the work is done and the island’s winemakers are in a reflective, generous mood. The local Assyrtiko grape produces a white wine that’s dry, mineral, and honestly one of the more interesting whites I’ve had anywhere in Europe.

Visit Santo Wines above Fira for panoramic views and a tasting flight (around €18–25 depending on the tier). It’s touristy, yes, but the wines are legitimate. For something more serious, drive down to Domaine Sigalas near Oia or Estate Argyros in Episkopi Gonia. Estate Argyros doesn’t always advertise walk-in tastings, so call ahead — their Vinsanto (the sweet dessert wine made from sun-dried grapes) is worth the effort.

Several wine tour operators run harvest-themed experiences into October. I’d check GetYourGuide for guided vineyard tours that include transport — the roads between wineries are narrow and the local wine is too good to drive after.

What to Actually Do in October

Hike the Fira to Oia Trail

This 10km clifftop walk is the best free thing on the island. In October, you’re not doing it in 35°C heat, which changes the entire experience. Start in Fira around 9am, stop for coffee in Firostefani, and reach Oia by early afternoon before the sunset crowd arrives. Wear proper shoes — the path gets uneven past Imerovigli.

Explore Pyrgos Village

Most tourists skip this medieval hilltop village entirely. That’s their loss. The views from the Venetian castle ruins stretch across the entire caldera, and the restaurants here — Franco’s Café, Strogili — are calmer and honestly better value than anything on the main tourist drag in Fira.

Day Trip to Thirassia

The small island across the caldera from Santorini gets a fraction of the visitors. Ferries run from Ammoudi Bay, take about 25 minutes, and cost €10–15 return. There’s one proper taverna at the port, a donkey path up the cliff, and almost nobody. October makes it even quieter. Go for lunch, eat grilled octopus, and take the afternoon ferry back.

Practical Things Worth Knowing

  • Car rental — Book in advance, even in October. Expect €40–60 per day for a small automatic. ATC and Hertz both have offices in Fira.
  • Getting there — Santorini Airport (JTR) receives direct flights from major European hubs through late October. Ryanair and easyJet typically run routes into early November.
  • Booking tours — For sailing trips or cooking classes, Viator has solid options with verified reviews. Catamaran sunset cruises are still running in October and genuinely worth doing.
  • ATMs — Use the ones inside banks in Fira rather than standalone machines to avoid high third-party fees.
  • Tipping — Not mandatory but appreciated; rounding up to the nearest €5 on a restaurant bill is the local norm.

The Bottom Line on October vs. Other Months

May gets a lot of attention as the ‘shoulder season’ sweet spot, and it deserves it. But October has an edge: the harvest energy, the lower prices, the fact that the tourists who do show up in October tend to be slightly more interested in the actual place than in getting the perfect Instagram photo. The island feels a little more itself. That’s worth something.
